Big Brothers Big Sisters

There is a school-based program and a community-based program.

The school based program focuses on helping students to achieve academic success. The Big Brother or Big Sister meets with the student at SWE once a week during their Related Arts class (except PE). A student is matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister based on interests and needs. Students may be match with same gender or opposite gender. Each week, they work on an individualized plan to reinforce academic skills. Such activities may include working on school assignments, reading together, or playing educational games. Students also work on developing the Character Counts core principles of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring, fairness and citizenship.

The community based program focuses more on helping the child socially and emotionally rather than academically. The Big Brother or Big Sister meets with the child outside of SWE. Children are also matched based on interests and needs, but a child is matched with a same gender adult.
